San Diego PR for defense and life science companies

The Navy and biotech are San Diego's two biggest business stories, and in both a careless sentence can cost a contract or a partner.

Pocket PR, a remote team in Kyiv and Brno, pitches the San Diego Business Journal, the Union-Tribune and the biotech trades for defense and life science companies, and clears every line before it reaches a reporter.

What a San Diego defense pitch can and cannot say

Defense is a bigger share of the San Diego economy than most founders expect.

The 2025 SDMAC report credits military spending with 22.2% of gross regional product, and $19.8 billion in defense contracts went to more than 2,000 regional companies.

Reporters here know the bases and the prime contractors by name, so vague claims fail fast.

Shield AI's $240 million round, the largest in San Diego in 2025, made defense autonomy a local beat. The same SDMAC report showed the first job decline in years, and reporters needed companies to explain it.

Before the first pitch we agree three lists with the client.

  • Facts that can be printed. Only this list reaches a reporter in writing.
  • Facts for context. These can be confirmed off the record.
  • Internal only. Private customer names and unit counts, plus anything covered by export rules.

A pitch that works names one thing a reporter can check, such as a public test or a facility, and gives a number they can verify. For dual-use companies the civilian customer is often the stronger San Diego story. A hospital or a port can be named and photographed.

Torrey Pines life science news

Biocom counted 61,866 direct life science jobs in San Diego in 2025 and $3.9 billion of investment.

Most local biotech news is about money or trial data. The Business Journal has a reporter who mainly covers tech and life sciences.

The Union-Tribune changed owners in 2023 and lost its tech reporter that year.

In 2025 it advertised for a tech and biotech business reporter, so check current bylines before you pitch.

Executives in the cluster also read national trades such as Endpoints News and BioSpace.

One local story paired with one trade mention reaches investors and buyers at once.

The Biocom partnering conference brings more than 600 investors and executives to the Lodge at Torrey Pines in February, and presenter applications close on 13 November 2026.

Pacific hours and the February double peg

San Diego keeps Pacific Time, so newsrooms open at about 5 pm in Brno. The Business Journal prints weekly.

A pitch sent on Monday or Tuesday has the best chance of the next issue.

A contract story waits until the customer has made the award public. Larger Pentagon awards appear in its daily contract announcements.

WEST 2027 runs 16 to 18 February at the San Diego Convention Center, and the Biocom conference follows a week later. February carries both of the city's beats. November is the second defense window, when SDMAC publishes its yearly impact report and reporters look for contractors to quote.

San Diego retainers next to Los Angeles

AM World Group's 2026 guide puts San Diego retainers at $3,000 to $18,000 a month, with most firms between $4,000 and $12,000, below Los Angeles rates.

Biotech and defense specialists charge $10,000 to $25,000, because the work needs people who read a clinical readout or a contract award without errors.

Our plans start from $390 a month, and the PR pricing breakdown shows where San Diego sits nationally.

How San Diego pitches get cleared and timed

  1. Release check for defense lines

Before a San Diego defense or dual-use pitch goes out we strip anything a customer or regulator would not want public, and keep what a reporter can verify.

  2. February double peg

WEST and the Biocom partnering conference fall a week apart in February 2027. Contract news gets planned around one and financing news around the other.

  3. Local plus trade pairing

We pair the San Diego Business Journal or Union-Tribune with one national trade title, so a local story also reaches the buyers who read Endpoints or defense trade press.

Situation
A company building uncrewed surface vessels books meetings around WEST 2027 and wants San Diego press before the show, without disclosing any customer.
What we do
We clear a short pitch about combat-tested design lessons that the company can discuss openly, send it to the Business Journal defense coverage and KPBS two weeks before the show, and offer the founder for interviews on the show floor.
Outcome
A good result is one local business story and one trade mention that name the company and its public claims only, with every line cleared in advance.

Questions

What San Diego defense and biotech teams ask

How much does a PR agency in San Diego cost?

AM World Group puts San Diego retainers at $3,000 to $18,000 a month, with an average of $4,000 to $12,000. Biotech and defense specialists charge $10,000 to $25,000.

Which San Diego outlets cover biotech companies?

The San Diego Business Journal has a reporter who mainly covers tech and life sciences, and the Union-Tribune advertised a tech and biotech business reporter role in 2025.

Can a defense company get press in San Diego without revealing customers?

Yes. Reporters write about capability and hiring, and public contracts are fair game. We agree in advance what stays private and pitch only facts that can be printed.

When is the best time of year for San Diego defense PR?

February, around the WEST conference. November is the other window, when the yearly military economic impact report comes out and reporters look for contractors.

Do San Diego reporters care about cross-border stories?

Yes. KPBS and the Union-Tribune both cover the border economy. A Tijuana manufacturing link can turn a product story into a regional one.
