A PR consultant is one experienced person you hire to shape your story and get it in front of the right reporters.
You pay for judgement and contacts, usually $75 to $300 an hour in the US or a monthly retainer.
Self-serve software costs less and leaves the work to you. A boutique agency or a managed plan covers more ground.

A PR consultant advises on how a company should be seen and makes it happen in the press.
Strategy decides the angle and when to go out with it. Execution is the pitching and the interview prep.
Senior consultants lean to strategy, while most freelancers do both.

A typical month with a growing company looks like this. What a consultant does not do is volume.
Sending to hundreds of reporters or watching five markets every day is agency or software work.

The US market in 2026. Many consultants are freelancers, so the useful split is the work.
A consultant is hired mainly for strategy, a freelance publicist mainly to pitch. UK and European agency bands are on how much PR costs.

Consultants price in four ways, so ask which one before comparing quotes.
Specialists in sectors such as tech, health or finance charge 30 to 50 percent above general rates, and consultants with strong reporter contacts 40 to 60 percent more.
Fractional PR means renting part of a senior communications lead's week.
The person joins your meetings and chat and acts as head of communications one or two days a week, without a full-time salary.
The risk is urgent work landing on their days off, so put response times in writing, including who covers their holidays.

Before comparing rates, ask what you hold at the end.
Consultants usually sell a short diagnostic, a programme built around one launch, or a monthly advisory seat.
| Shape | What you hold at the end | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | a written plan and a first story angle | you are not yet sure PR is the right spend |
| Launch programme | coverage around one dated announcement | a round, a product or a market entry is booked |
| Advisory seat | monthly hours with a senior lead, often no pitching | someone in house executes and wants a second opinion |
At Pocket PR the diagnostic is the free 15-minute call, and you leave with a first angle and a 90-day plan whether you hire us or not.
A launch is what the Scale plan is for, from $1,490 a month. Every plan includes the pitching, so there is no advice-only seat.
The plans list what each month covers.
A boutique is a small agency with a narrow focus, such as fintech or a single city.
You get a team that keeps going when one person is on holiday.
You also get a layer of management and a minimum term, usually three to six months, because the first month goes on learning your business.

A consultant is the right call when the problem is judgement, not hours.
Ask these questions on the first call and compare answers in writing.
A promise of guaranteed placement is a warning, because the only placements anyone can guarantee are paid ones.
Mostly the research a junior used to do, which AI now drafts in minutes.
Most PR people who use it still rewrite what it produces. Judgement and relationships stay human, which is what a consultant's fee pays for.

Software builds the media lists and tracks follow-ups, so the senior hours go to decisions and relationships rather than spreadsheets.

Questions
An independent specialist who advises a company on its public story and media relations, and often does the pitching too. Most work alone or with one or two associates.
In the US, 2026 rates run from about $50 to $80 for juniors to $150 to $300 for senior consultants, with crisis specialists at $200 to $500.
A senior communications lead who works a fixed share of the week inside your company, usually on a monthly retainer, instead of a full-time hire.
Usually per month, yes. A consultant may cost less than a boutique retainer when the scope is narrower, so compare the hours and markets each one covers.
Not the relationship part. Most PR pros already use generative AI for drafts, but nearly all of them edit what it writes, and journalists reject pitches that read as machine-made.
