San Francisco PR for AI and SaaS startups

Reporters on the Bay Area AI beat open a stream of launch emails every morning.

Pocket PR, a remote team in Kyiv and Brno, pitches San Francisco's tech press for AI and SaaS companies by finding the one story a named reporter wants this week and sending it at the right Pacific hour, from $390 a month.

The Bay Area venture market in four numbers

Why a $2 million seed is not news in SF

Startup Genome ranks the Bay Area first in the world, and first for AI-native companies, with a median seed of $1.9 million and a median Series A of $15 million.

A $2 million seed sits in the middle of the pack. TechCrunch is still where seed and Series A news goes first.

Newsletters like Platformer and Newcomer quote founders when they bring a number the writer can use.

Four angles keep landing.

  • A round with a clear number and a named lead investor, offered first as an exclusive.
  • AI infrastructure stories backed by real usage or cost data.
  • A known company running the product in production.
  • The city's own economy, such as AI companies taking office space and hiring.

Feature lists rarely survive the first read. Awards and partnership news without a customer result fare no better.

Keynote days and other pitch killers

A reporter covering AI or developer tools can tell a templated launch email in one line, and plenty of them are written by a model.

Timing decides more in San Francisco than anywhere else, because one big keynote takes the tech press for a day or two.

Our pitching guide covers what the pitch itself needs.

  • A clear day. A keynote from Apple or OpenAI fills the tech pages, and Dreamforce takes the enterprise reporters for a week.
  • A moved date. We check the Bay Area calendar before setting an embargo. When a keynote lands on the day, we move ours.

A Warsaw seed round pitched to SF

Situation
A Polish team building inference tooling closes a seed round led by a Bay Area fund and wants San Francisco coverage the week before Disrupt.
What we do
We offer the round under embargo to one reporter who covered inference costs this year. The pitch runs two paragraphs and carries the customer count and cost data the company can share, and the lead investor is briefed to confirm details.
Outcome
A good result is one exclusive in a Bay Area tech outlet on the release morning and pickup in venture newsletters, reported with links. Illustrative, not a client result.

Pacific time from Brno and Kyiv

San Francisco is nine hours behind Brno and ten behind Kyiv for most of the year.

Europe and the US change their clocks on different weekends, so twice a year the gap shrinks by an hour.

  • 25 October to 1 November 2026, eight hours to Brno, because Europe changes its clocks on 25 October and the US on 1 November

  • 14 to 28 March 2027, eight hours again, until Europe catches up with the US change

  • A 6 am Pacific embargo lifts at 3 pm in Brno and 4 pm in Kyiv, so we are at our desks when the story goes live

What a San Francisco PR firm charges

Bay Area agencies almost never publish a rate card.

National 2026 cost guides put startup retainers at $3,500 to $10,000 a month and mid-market firms at $10,000 to $25,000, often with a six month minimum.

Access drives the price, so ask a firm which Bay Area reporters it pitched last month and what ran.

Local SF firm or a remote team

For a seed or Series A startup, most San Francisco coverage starts with an email and a video call.

The reporter rarely asks where the PR person sits. The beat matters far more.

A local firm

  • Coffee meetings and event invitations, which help late-stage companies that host their own dinners.

A remote team

  • Works when the person pitching knows the beat and answers within the hour when the reporter replies. From Kyiv and Brno, the Pacific morning is our afternoon.

Three rules for a Bay Area launch

  1. Category reporters only

We pitch the three to five Bay Area reporters who wrote about your category in the last quarter, not the masthead. An off-beat pitch in a San Francisco tech inbox costs you the next one.

  2. Embargoed rounds on Pacific mornings

Funding news goes to one outlet under embargo first. The rest get it at 6 am Pacific, which is mid-afternoon for us.

  3. October launch window

Launches cluster around SF Tech Week and Disrupt in October 2026. Dreamforce week stays off limits unless the news is about enterprise SaaS.

Questions

What founders ask about San Francisco PR

How much does a PR agency in San Francisco cost?

Bay Area firms rarely publish rates. National 2026 cost guides put startup retainers at $3,500 to $10,000 a month and mid-market engagements at $10,000 to $25,000.

Should a startup give an exclusive to one San Francisco outlet?

Often yes for a funding round. One reporter with an embargoed exclusive usually writes a fuller story than five reporters sent the same release.

What is the best week to launch in San Francisco?

Around SF Tech Week and TechCrunch Disrupt in October, when reporters look for launches. Avoid Thanksgiving week and the days around major product keynotes.

Do San Francisco reporters accept AI-written pitches?

Tech reporters spot generic AI text quickly and many filter it. Every pitch we send is written and signed by a person.

Can a European startup get covered by TechCrunch?

Yes, when the round or the customer is news on its own and the pitch reaches the reporter who covers that category instead of a general inbox.
