Earned media

Earned media is attention you did not buy.

A reporter writes about your company, or a customer praises you on a forum without being asked.

Someone else chose to include you, and readers give that more weight than an ad. AI assistants have started doing the same.

A news story, a cited report, a podcast and a forum thread on one table, four kinds of earned attention

What is earned media

Earned media is any mention of your brand that a third party chose to publish without payment from you. The test is editorial control.

If the person who published it could have left you out and chose to include you, the mention is earned.

You give up control of the headline and the angle, and that loss is the price of credibility.

Earned vs paid vs owned vs shared media

Most marketers use four buckets, often called the PESO model.

The lines blur on social platforms, so the useful question is always who decided to publish.

A sponsored article in a real newspaper is paid. A founder's LinkedIn post is owned until a reporter quotes it.

What are some earned media examples

Examples help because the same outlet can carry both paid and earned content.

What these share is that none of them could be ordered from a rate card.

  • A trade journal reports your new supply contract and quotes your COO on the figures.
  • A business reporter calls your founder for comment on a regulation change and uses two sentences.
  • A national site cites your survey in a trend piece and links to the full data.
  • An industry podcast books your CTO for a 40-minute interview.
  • An analyst firm lists you among the vendors in a category report.
  • A comparison listicle written by an independent editor includes your product with a short review.
  • A long thread on Reddit recommends you to someone asking for options.
  • A conference invites your founder to speak after reading earlier coverage.

Why do AI answers cite earned media

AI assistants that search the web before answering pull from pages they consider independent.

Muck Rack has run its What Is AI Reading study three times since July 2025, and earned media led every edition, with 89% in July 2025, 82% in December 2025 and 84% in May 2026.

The latest edition covered more than 25 million cited links.

  • 84%of AI citations went to earned media in May 2026Muck Rack
  • 27%of AI citations went to journalism aloneMuck Rack
  • 0.3%of AI citations went to paid or advertorial contentMuck Rack

Our own test of 48 AI answers found citations spread thin, with most domains cited only once, so one good trade story or fair listicle entry can move a brand into the set. Some answers come from memory without a search, which rewards steady coverage over one spike. The full data is on share of voice.

How do you get earned media

There is no shortcut that survives an editor.

The work follows a sequence, and the pitch itself has its own rules in how to pitch journalists.

A clean press page and a paid push after a strong story both help, but neither replaces these steps.

  1. Find the fact outsiders care about

A contract size, a price trend, a failure rate, a hiring pattern in your sector.

  2. Back it with something checkable

Data, a named customer who agreed to speak, a document.

  3. Pick a short list of reporters

People who covered something close in the last few months.

  4. Offer access, not adjectives

An interview slot, an embargo, early numbers.

  5. Answer journalist requests in your field

A sharp two-line answer from a real expert can land a quote.

  6. Follow up once, then move on

How to measure earned media without AVE

Advertising value equivalency prices a story as if it were an ad.

The Barcelona Principles 4.0, published by AMEC in June 2025, say AVEs should not be used, and the reasons are on PR measurement.

Count these instead.

  • Original stories. Articles written by a journalist about you or quoting you, one line each with a link.
  • Reprints. Syndicated copies, counted separately so they cannot inflate the count.
  • Target-outlet hit rate. How many priority titles ran something.
  • Message pull-through. Whether the story carried your key point or only your name.
  • Share of voice. Your share of category mentions against named competitors.
  • AI answer presence. Whether AI assistants name you when someone asks about your category.
  • Referral and branded search. Visits from the story and searches for your name afterwards.

What is the difference between PR and earned media

Public relations is the work, earned media is one of its results.

PR also covers work that never shows up as coverage, crisis preparation being the obvious case.

An agency that guarantees placements is selling something closer to paid media, because someone other than the editor made the decision.

Is earned media better than paid media

Neither replaces the other, and most teams run both.

Use paid for what you need people to see this week and earned for what you need them to believe.

  • Paid media lets you pick the date and the audience.
  • Earned media carries a third party's judgement. Buyers treat that as evidence, and so do AI systems.
  • With little budget, earned media is the better first bet. It costs time and skill rather than cash.
  • For leads next month, paid is faster.

Turning a company fact into coverage

  1. Find the story an editor would run

We read your numbers and contracts to find the one fact that matters to people outside your company.

  2. Place it where AI and buyers look

We target the trade titles and review sites that already show up in AI answers for your category. Nobody on the list is there to make it longer.

  3. Count only what ran

The monthly log lists original stories with links, reprints on a separate line and no advertising value figure.

Route data turned into a trade story

A logistics startup turns route data into a trade story

Situation
A small freight startup had a product update to announce and no coverage. Ads were bringing clicks, but no reporter had ever written about the company.
What we do
Instead of the update, the team pulled six months of anonymised delivery times by region and offered the table as an exclusive to one logistics trade reporter, with the founder available for a same-day call.
Outcome
Illustrative. The outcome to aim for is one original story with a chart credited to the company, later quoted by two other outlets and cited in an AI answer about delivery delays.

Questions

What teams ask before chasing coverage

Is earned media free?

The placement costs nothing. The work that earns it costs time, or a PR budget.

Is social media earned media?

When someone else shares or reviews you, yes. Your own posts are owned, and boosted posts are paid.

Are press releases earned media?

A release on a wire is paid distribution. The story a reporter writes after reading it is earned.

What is earned media value?

A number that prices coverage as if it were advertising space. Measurement bodies reject it because space cost says nothing about effect.

How long does it take to get earned media?

A trade story can land in a few weeks if the angle is strong. Steady national coverage usually builds over several months of pitching.
