Public relations in Germany for tech and industry

Pocket PR runs public relations in Germany for Central and Eastern European tech and industrial firms, remotely from Kyiv and Brno with no German office, from $390 a month.

German editors check every number and cut superlatives, so the plan starts with proof such as a named German customer or test data.

Our pitches go out in English, which many tech and trade reporters accept from international companies.

National and regional desks expect German with the formal Sie, written by your own native-speaking spokesperson or a translator you approve.

How to write a Pressemitteilung German editors read

The German press release has its own grammar. Editors expect sober language, a fact in the headline and proof in the first lines.

Keep it to one page, send it as text in the email body with a link to the press room, and give one quote that says something, because German editors cut quotes that only praise.

Pitching etiquette in Germany

German reporters open up to foreign companies once a German customer shows why the story matters here.

Trade fairs drive B2B news, so we brief trade editors four to six weeks ahead, while they build preview pages.

A Sperrfrist, the German embargo, is kept when agreed in advance. General rules are in our pitching guide.

  • Sie, surnames, titles. "Sehr geehrte Frau Dr. Keller" until the reporter switches to first names. Many never do.
  • One reminder. A polite follow-up after a few days is fine. Three calls are not.
  • Exclusives work for trade titles and Handelsblatt when the offer and the deadline are named.
  • GDPR. Use a reporter's professional address only and remove it on request.

What German media expect from your press room

A company without a proper online press room looks unfinished to a German editor.

Section 5 of the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz requires German website operators to publish an Impressum, and editors look for the same on a foreign firm's site.

Public relations in Germany for foreign companies

Suppliers from Poland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine rarely sell German industry on the product alone. The story is the delivery time.

Sometimes it is the certification, or the plant that serves German customers.

With 64.2% of German startups relying mainly on US technology providers, European alternatives with local hosting have an angle too.

  • A named German customer and a measurable result
  • A new German subsidiary or service team
  • Test data from a German lab or university partner
  • A founder view on the skilled worker shortage, which 14.9% of German startups call pressing

Berlin or Munich for German startup news

Germany has no single media or startup capital, so the city decides which desk cares.

Public money arrives through EXIST grants for university spin-offs and through the federally backed High-Tech Gründerfonds.

German startup desks follow an HTGF round wherever the company sits.

  • Berlin holds most of the startup media and many investors.
  • Munich leads in deep tech and industrial software.
  • Hamburg is strong in logistics and media.
  • Frankfurt is the finance desk.

Regional business press in Germany

Regional dailies still run serious business pages, and their reporters know the local Mittelstand by name.

For a foreign supplier this is often the easiest door.

A new customer in Swabia or a service hub near Düsseldorf is local news there, even when it is too small for Handelsblatt, and regional coverage gives the national desk a reason to call.

  • Stuttgarter Zeitung, companies around Stuttgart and across Swabia

  • Rheinische Post, companies in Düsseldorf and the Rhineland

  • Hamburger Abendblatt, companies in Hamburg

  • Münchner Merkur, companies in Munich and Upper Bavaria

How a German media plan is built

  1. A press kit German desks accept

We rebuild your release and online press room with a named contact and a proper Impressum. The German text comes from your German-speaking team or a translator you approve.

  2. Trade before national

For industrial companies we start with VDI nachrichten and the sector titles. That coverage then opens Handelsblatt.

  3. Fair-driven calendar

The big fairs such as Hannover Messe set the dates for launches and embargoed briefings through the year.

A Polish IoT firm entering Germany

Situation
A Polish industrial sensor maker signs its first German customer, a mid-sized machine builder in Baden-Württemberg, and plans a stand at Hannover Messe.
What we do
We would write the release in English around the customer's approved quote and test data, and the company's own translator would prepare the German version. VDI nachrichten and a regional business desk get a briefing before the fair. Handelsblatt hears about the founder only after trade coverage runs.
Outcome
A hypothetical scenario for illustration only. It shows the order German media usually reward. Proof comes first, the profile later.

Questions

What foreign founders ask about German media

How much does a PR agency in Germany cost?

Enterie puts a continuous media relations campaign in Germany at €3,500 to €6,000 a month, and one release distribution campaign at around €2,000. Pocket PR starts from $390 a month, month to month.

Do I need to pitch German media in German?

For national and trade titles, mostly yes. Some tech reporters at t3n or Gründerszene take English pitches, and we pitch in English. Desks that need German get a version from your own native-speaking spokesperson or a translator you approve, and a German-speaking spokesperson lifts the quality of the story. We name those desks before the first pitch.

What is a Pressemitteilung and how is it different from a US press release?

It is the German press release. Editors expect it to be factual and sober, with sourced numbers under a clear headline and a named contact at the end. Superlatives and marketing language get it binned faster than in the US.

Is presseportal.de worth using?

presseportal.de and the ots feed are run by news aktuell, a dpa company, so releases reach many German newsrooms and stay searchable. It is useful for listed companies and formal news. It does not replace pitching named reporters.

Should a startup in Germany target Berlin or Munich media?

Target the reporter, not the city. Berlin hosts most startup media and investors. Munich is stronger for deep tech and industry. Süddeutsche and the Munich business press matter more there.

Can German editors publish paid content as news?

No. The German Press Code of the Deutscher Presserat requires a clear separation of advertising and editorial content, so paid placement must be labelled. Earned coverage has to be pitched on its news value.
