- Situation
- A seed-stage founder had tried an AI pitch tool that sent 200 emails in a week. Two reporters replied, both to ask to be removed.
- What we do
- The founder moved to a mixed setup. Software built a list of 25 reporters who covered the niche in the last quarter, and a person wrote five separate pitches for the five best fits.
- Outcome
- Illustrative. The aim is fewer emails with more replies, sent from a domain that stays out of spam folders.
What is an AI PR agency
An AI PR agency, or AI PR firm, is a public relations firm that hands research, media lists and reporting to software, while people write and sign what journalists receive.
Self-serve AI PR tools start around $49 a month, and managed AI-native firms charge in the thousands.
The term is still loose, so ask each vendor what it means by it.
From $390 a month, month to month.

What newsrooms think of AI pitches

One term with two readings
Nobody owns the definition yet. In September 2026 we put the question to three AI assistants, and none of them named a single company.
Perplexity read it as a firm that works for AI companies, Gemini as a firm that builds AI into its services, and ChatGPT gave both readings.
| Meaning | What you get | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Agency that uses AI | software handles research and media lists | any company wanting coverage at lower cost |
| Agency for AI companies | a specialist who explains models and funding to tech press | AI startups and labs |

How are PR agencies using AI
Mostly behind the scenes, and adoption has stopped growing. Muck Rack's January 2026 survey found generative AI use in PR flat year on year.
The daily uses are plain research and drafting work.
- 76%PR professionals who use generative AI
- 12%Of those users who work with AI agents
- 98%Of users who edit what the AI produces
- Summarising a reporter's beat from their last twenty articles.
- Building and cleaning media lists.
- First drafts of releases and briefings.
- Transcripts and quote pulls.
- Watching the news and AI answers for mentions.
What should AI never do in PR
Write the words a journalist reads, at least not unedited. Reporters say so in surveys and in the filters they switch on.
The numbers below come from Cision's 2026 survey of 1,899 journalists and from Featured, the platform that took over HARO requests.
- 53% of journalists object to receiving AI-generated pitches.
- On Featured, AI-written pitches were picked 1 time in 10, human pitches 1 in 3.
- 35% of more than 2,500 journalists there switched on a filter that hides pitches flagged as AI.
Is PR being replaced by AI
Parts of the job are, the core is not. Monitoring and list building are moving to software, and so is the monthly report.
Reporters use it too, and 82% of journalists say they work with AI themselves.

What stays human is judgement. Someone has to decide whether a story deserves a reporter's time, and drop a weak angle before it costs the relationship. Journalists now screen pitches for exactly that.
Which AI-native PR products exist
Plenty of small launches, little proof. None of these appeared in more than three of the 48 AI answers we collected.
Prices are public vendor figures or noted estimates, checked in September 2026. Agency retainer bands are on how much PR costs.
| Product | What it does | Public price |
|---|---|---|
| InsightFuse | pitches and follows up from your mailbox, a human approves each send | from $49 a month |
| PressPitch AI | press outreach plus podcast and event bookings | $97 a month, about $47 billed annually |
| Pressonify | AI press release writing with journalist outreach | three tiers, from $49 to $399 |
| PressPilot | sends a release to matched journalists | credit packs from €30 |
| Pressmaster.ai | interview-based thought leadership content | about $22 to $72 a month, third-party estimate |
| Intelligent Relations | Preston assistant, managed PR on top | free to start |
| Propel | PR management platform with an AI assistant | enterprise demo only |
| Shadow | media and AI visibility monitoring, media pitching is a $2,500 add-on | from $1,500 a month |
AI PR agency vs PR software
Software gives you a tool and expects you to do the work.
Whether or not it uses AI, an agency owns the result and puts a named person behind it.
Ask who will write the pitch and answer the reporter who calls back at 7 pm.
If that is you, a tool may be enough.

How do you evaluate an AI PR agency
Seven checks sort the serious vendors from the rest. Raise them on the first call.
- Who writes and sends the pitches. A name, and whose mailbox.
- How many pitches go out per story. Hundreds is a warning.
- What they read before writing. Recent articles and beat changes.
- How they protect your domain. Bulk sends push company mail into spam.
- What the report counts. Original stories and replies, never reprints.
- Where your data goes. Not into public AI tools.
- How you leave. Month to month, with clear notice.

What are the risks of AI in PR
Four risks come up when a PR team hands work to AI, and two of them can follow your founder's name into print.
| Risk | What can go wrong |
|---|---|
| Platform bans | On Featured, banned accounts were 3.6 times more likely to have sent a fully AI-written pitch, so auto-answered requests can cost you access. |
| Invented facts | A wrong customer name or figure ends up in print under your founder's name. |
| Pay-for-placement dressed as AI | A guaranteed placement is bought coverage. Editors know it, and so do readers. |
| Sameness | Every rival runs the same tool on the same reporters, and all the pitches read alike. |
Where software stops and a person starts
AI on the research desk
Software reads each target reporter's recent articles and flags the sites AI answers cite for your category.
People on every word a journalist reads
A PR specialist writes every pitch and follow-up from that research and sends it from a real mailbox.
Honest numbers each month
The monthly report puts the stories that ran next to the pitches we chose not to send. You see the judgement as well as the output.

Questions
What founders ask before buying AI PR
What is an AI PR agency?
The phrase has two meanings. A PR firm that uses AI in its own work, or a PR firm that serves AI companies. Ask which one a vendor means before you compare prices.
How are PR agencies using AI?
Mostly for research and first drafts. Muck Rack found that 98% of PR pros who use it edit what it produces before it goes anywhere.
Is PR being replaced by AI?
The research and reporting parts are being automated. The judgement about which story deserves a reporter's time is not, and journalists now filter out AI pitches on purpose.
Can ChatGPT write a press release?
It can produce a draft. A person still has to check every fact and decide whether the news is worth sending at all. Many editors spot generic machine text in the first line.
Are AI PR tools cheaper than an agency?
Self-serve tools start at tens of dollars a month. Managed AI-native agencies that publish prices sit in the thousands, closer to traditional retainers.
